Protecting Your Koi
Wildlife is naturally
attracted to outdoor ponds. The bad news is that
this can bring dangerous predators to your Koi
fish.
Koi where originally bred as a source of
protein, and swam among the flooded rice paddies
of China. While humans were their original
predator, these days their major threats come
from herons, raccoons, and cats.
Your pond should be bordered by a fence when is
at least two feet tall to prevent both heron and
raccoons from being able to get a great view
from water level. Another option for those who
don’t like the look of a fence is to install an
electric wire around the pond to keep raccoons
out and bird netting on top of the pond to ward
off heron.
You may also be able to scare away real herons
with a plastic statue of one place right next to
the pond. In order for it to really trick other
birds it will need to be moved to a new location
regularly.
