Pond Safety for Koi
You will want to design
your pond with your fish’s safety in mind to
help protect them from predators.
The following tips should
help your provide a safe home for your Koi and
other fish.
Fish Safety
While it may be hard to catch a Koi for you, in
truth they are actually fairly large and slow.
Their brilliant colors make them easy for
predators to see. In nature Koi are often black
and hang out on the bottom to protect
themselves. Other than hiding Koi have no real
defense mechanisms. Your shallow pond offers
them almost no protection from predators. Your
local herons and raccoons may look at your pond
as their local sushi buffet.
Designing your pond correctly can help to
protect your fish. Koi’s main predators are
herons and raccoons. There are lots of expensive
gadgets out there that claim to help protect
your fish, such as electric fences, heron
decoys, and others.
While some of these things may really help, they
are no match for smart design. Herons are visual
hunters, they need to see the Koi to come get
them. You can protect your Koi with the use of
atriums, trellises or gazebos. Climbing plants
on a trellis make an excellent protective
canopy.
Raccoons really enjoy fish so your will need to
protect your Koi against them as well. While
raccoons can swim, they can not dive. Your fish
will be fairly safe if the sides of your pond
drop straight down at least three feet. Sloping
sides to a pond provide an invitation to
raccoons to take a swim and get some sushi.
A deep pond will prevent herons from standing
there waiting for a fish to swim toward them.
While your pond should be at least three feet
deep it is really best to have it five feet
deep. Your fish will have more room to swim
around as well as being better protected. The
extra depth will really help your fish develop
strong muscles from going up and down.
Canopies or trellises will protect from herons,
and they will also prevent your fish from
getting sunburned. Koi’s are sensitive to sun
and their delicate skin is easily burned.
Another great protective feature for your pond
is a large dog that loves to chase raccoons and
herons. While this works great while your dog is
outside, you will also need a method to protect
your fish when your dog is not outside. Nets are
a great inexpensive way to keep predators out of
the pond. They are not always very attractive,
but are easy to remove want you are entertaining
or want to spend time out by the pond.
Nets can be quickly removed when you have
company and replaced once they have left. Since
Koi are very active, nets are also a good way to
ensure they stay in the pond. Koi are known to
jump as play, to try and catch insects on the
pond surface, or if they are startled. They can
easily end up on the side of the pond and will
most likely die if you are not right there to
place them back in the pond. You really want a
net to protect your new friends.
