Using Vitamins and Minerals for Preventative
Maintenance
A stable environment is
necessary in order to maintain the overall
health of your pond. Conditioning the water is a
key way in which you can create a stable
environment for your fish.
Some of your pond’s inhabitants may not be as
healthy as you would prefer, even with the use
of mechanical filtration and/or UV
sterilization. To help bring your fish back to
optimal health you should add vitamins and
minerals to your water.
Fish Vitamins
You can find a variety of different vitamins on
the market today which are made to improve the
vitality of your fish. While Koi can especially
benefit from the use of these vitamins other
pond fish will also benefit from their use.
The positive impact that these vitamins have on
your Koi can be seen in other fish as well.
Healthy growth and a normal metabolism depend on
the presence of vitamins in your fish’s system.
Spawning only increases the need for vitamins.
Lack of vitamins can lead to significant
consequences for your fish, as we will discuss
below.
Vitamin A – This vitamin is essential for
proper eyesight. Blindness and poor growth are
both consequences of a vitamin A deficiency.
Vitamin E – This vitamin is an
antioxidant which improves the functioning of
all the body’s mechanisms. One common place to
find this vitamin is wheat germ. Fatty
degeneration of the liver and bone disease can
both be the result of a vitamin E deficiency.
Vitamin K – This is an essential
component of proper blood clotting. Anemia and
extending clotting time are both caused by a
lack of this vitamin. Slow clotting times can
result in significantly longer healing times.
Vitamin B complex – B1 (thiamin) helps
nerves, digestion, and reproduction function
correctly. You can see paralysis of the fins,
poor color, and skittishness without enough B1.
B2 (riboflavin) assists the tissues of the body
with poor blood supply absorb oxygen. You can
see bleeding from the gills, cataracts, and
sensitivity to light as a result of insufficient
B2. An important vitamin for health growth is
niacin. You can see stunted growth if there is
not enough of this vitamin present.
Proper metabolism of fats, carbohydrates, and
proteins depends on the presence of choline
pantothenic acid (B6) and pyroxidine. There are
a variety of possible health problems related to
a lack of these vitamins, including internal
bleeding, reduced growth, and a lack of
appetite. Blood cell formation depends on the
presence of folic acid and cyanobalamin (B12).
You can see anemia and loss of appetite when
these vitamins are deficient.
Vitamin C – This vitamin is a powerful
antioxidant. Both collagen and cartilage
development depend on the presence of this
vitamin. While internal hemorrhaging is the most
serious side effect of a vitamin C deficiency,
you can also see deformed spines and gills.
Plant Minerals – Plant need these
essential elements to flourish. Fertilizer or
food created for water plants often contains the
important minerals that your plants need. Your
plants will be better able to remove impurities
form the water when they receive the proper
amounts of potassium, copper, and manganese.
This means that you will end up with a clearer
pond. There are many high quality plant foods on
the market today, such as Aquatic Plant Food
Tabs and TetraPond’s FloraFin. Both of these
products serve to increase propagation, improve
coloring, and encourage growth. Any plant food
or fertilizer you add to your pond should be
free of nitrates and phosphates.
The fish and plants in your pond need vitamins
and minerals in order to survive and thrive.
Most high quality foods will contain a good
nutritional balance which includes everything
your fish and plants will need. If you have any
doubts that your plants and fish are getting the
nutrients they need you should consider adding
vitamin and mineral supplements to your water.
